What is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE, is a surgical procedure that is very similar to cataract surgery. The eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial one, called an intraocular lens, or IOL. This procedure can act as an alternative to LASIK surgery and can significantly improve the vision of those with nearsightedness. RLE can also correct nearsightedness but is usually not the preferred method.

Is refractive lens exchange safe?

While all surgical procedures have their risks, refractive lens exchange is generally just as safe as cataract surgery. RLE has a high success rate with a low chance of complications. However, if any complications do arise, they can easily be treated with medication or additional surgery.

Does insurance cover refractive lens exchange?

Depending on your insurance company, RLE can be covered by insurance. Usually, RLE is not covered because it is seen as an elective or not medically necessary procedure. RLE also involves purchasing premium intraocular lenses to be installed. Your lenses may not be covered by insurance as well.

Am I A Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange is an excellent alternative for those who are not candidates for LASIK. This popular procedure can not only drastically improve your vision, but can also prevent you from developing cataracts!
