What is Dry Eye?

A dry eye is a common medical condition that affects both the eye’s health and the quality of one’s vision. A lack or imbalance of lubricating tears or protective lipid oils on the eye’s surface results in dryness. In addition to blurred vision, red eyes, irritation, itchiness, and discomfort, dry eyes can also impact eye comfort and vision over time, making contact lenses uncomfortable.

What causes dry eyes?

Medical researchers are still studying the causes of dry eye, but certain factors have been identified as contributing to the condition. There are a wide variety of systemic diseases that can cause dry eyes, including Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren’s Syndrome. In addition to the previous factors, environmental factors are also important. Contact lenses use and some prescription medications can cause dry eyes.
